In reading Psalm 16 I can’t help but wonder what the secret is that the Psalmist had that helped him in times of trouble and distress. In times of prosperity. In times of “ho-hum-bored-like-a-drum”. Then I get to the last verse and the answer is right there jumping off the page: it’s knowing God is there, knowing He’s got my back. I can trust Him with all of my life. It’s God’s presence that makes the difference in one’s life. It’s knowing that no matter what happens to you, He will be there with you, holding your hand, or even carrying you through it. This is the joy that’s talked about in the Bible. It’s the indescribable feeling of security that helped Daniel as he was lowered into the lion’s den. It was the bold confidence that the three Jewish teens entered the fiery furnace with. It’s what Job discovered as he sat in misery listening to his three, so-called, friends try to explain away his suffering. It’s what every single disciple, including Paul, knew as they pressed on through persecution. It’s what every believer knows, yet often forgets in times of trouble. Press into God, and you will know exactly what I mean by our greatest joy comes from Knowing God is near, and that you are His child. I want this, do you?
You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of Your presence and the pleasures of living with You forever.
Psalms 16:11
