The one thing that pride does more than anything else, and is the most detrimental aspect to it, is it separates people by severing relationships. This is most true in our relationship with God. Our pride tells us, “we don’t need Him, we can figure it out on our own”. Or it says, “why should I, I’ve done nothing wrong”. Or it keeps us from forgiving when we are wounded by another. Pride drives us to focus on ourselves to the point of being the most important thing. This goes against every principle of love, which is what true Christianity is all about. Of all the above mentioned effects, the worst and most damaging thing pride does, is God distances Himself from us when we become prideful. We run from Him, and He in turn distances Himself from us, and thus creating a chasm wider than we imagine. When this happens, it takes more time and more effort to get back into fellowship with Him. Sometimes, it’s not even possible, because it’s too late. If you find yourself in a tough spot, it may be that God is disciplining you (being a believer) for your prideful actions, for He does discipline those He loves. The point here is one that is consistently stated throughout scripture: A kingdom divided will not last. Severed relationships are the chief cause of this principle. And pride promotes separation from both sides. Is being prideful really worth the consequences that always result from its initialization inside a human soul? Choose God’s gift of humility, for He cares enough to give it to us. And He honors it by drawing closer to us.
6 Though the Lord is great, He cares for the humble, but He keeps His distance from the proud.
Psalms 138:6
