Before we get “gung-ho” about something, it might be a good idea to bring it before God in prayer. Why do I say this? Because God knows us better than we know ourselves. Asking Him sheds light on our request, exposing things we might not have thought of. It also reveals our dependence upon God. He is in control, not us. And He knows us better than we know ourselves. Peter jumped the gun, pledging his allegiance to Jesus without examining the cost. The other disciples did the same, but God decided to use a Peter as the example to emphasize this truth. Doesn’t it make sense then, if we want to know ourselves better, our focus should be on the relationship that will reveal more about us? Just a thought worth considering in a world that drives us to look within to find ourselves. The truth is, we have to look to God for the answer to our sin problem.
27 On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert Me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”29 Peter said to Him, “Even if everyone else deserts You, I never will.”30 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter–this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know Me.”31 “No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You!” And all the others vowed the same.
