Even though these guidelines are given to a future Israelite king, they are 100% beneficial to us as well. The reasons are given right in the text. We are to read God’s word daily. Why? To learn a proper reverence (healthy fear) for God by learning how to obey and love Him. It will prevent us from becoming proud, acting as if we are above others. It also prevents us from turning away from God even in the smallest way. And finally, it helps us to know God, so we can pass on the importance of knowing Him and His truth to our children and others. I call all of these “knowing our place”. Daily reading and interaction with God sets the thermostat of our being, and we see things and events through His eyes, under His control. It helps us live full lives, not in spite of the circumstances, rather because of them. Get into the Word, and the Word will get into you. It’s exactly what we were made for.
18 “When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. 19 He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees. 20 This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.
