If there’s one thing that you should teach your children, aside from knowing God, it’s this: teach them to guard their heart. What I mean is teach then to use discernment in their thinking process. Have God Be the filter in which everything passes through. That way it will protect them (if they listen and follow) discernment’s path. It’s like a computer, garbage in, garbage out. What you put into your body, eventually comes out. It’s the same with the mind and personality. If you’re constantly allowing in filth, then eventually what comes out is filth. You can’t change the process. Likewise, if you focus on what is good, and right, and truthful, and pure, then that’s what will come out. As Romans 12:2 tells us, when you guard your heart, you transform yourself by the renewing your mind. What goes in, eventually comes out. There’s no better example of this than witnessing it within a family. Parents may teach their children right from wrong, and what’s good and bad, but if they don’t practice it themselves, it doesn’t become part of their children. Children become who their parents are, not what they preach. It’s not until it matches, that it becomes part of their lives. Guard your heart, for it determines everything.
23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
Proverbs 4:23
