When Solomon Met God In A Dream….

When Solomon met God in a dream, God’s words revealed His true character. Not only that, but God also revealed to us what we should desire for ourselves, wisdom. Wisdom can become a prideful issue (if we hoard it), but Solomon’s request was that of selfless pursuit of justice, in order to govern and lead God’s chosen people. As God tells him, Solomon could’ve asked for riches, for fame, a long life, or the death of his enemies, but instead humbled himself and asked for wisdom with justice. If you really think about this, God knows human nature. He knows our nature and the temptations of the devil. People have always pursued fame, fortune, revenge, and good health since the Fall in the garden. When Solomon didn’t ask for any of these, God was pleased. It reinforced God’s view, that when we focus on the most important things in life (God and people), we “get it”, we know our place. We know Who’s in charge and Who it is we are accountable. Solomon was the wisest man to ever live, and yet he was one of the most miserable ones as well. Why? Because he knew the truth, but did a poor job following it throughout his life. Solomon tried all the ways the “world tells us to try in order to make us happy”. He discovered they all fail. They all fail to deliver the hyped up promises. If you don’t believe me, read the book of Ecclesiastes, particularly the last chapter. God wants us to be loyal to Him and to others. He wants us to be selfless (which is exactly what love is). He wants us to pursue knowing Him, not trying to fill ourselves with fleeting, transient things. God knows exactly what fills a man’s heart and satisfies. And that is God alone. When a man rejects the Gospel, he guarantees himself one of the two outcomes: it will lead him to sadness, or to wrath. Look at the world today, do you see a lot of sadness and anger? There’s a reason why, and now that you know it’s cause, what are you going to do about it? Ask God for wisdom. And when you receive it, put it to good use, rescuing lost souls.

5 That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”6 Solomon replied, “You showed faithful love to Your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to You. And You have continued Your faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne.7 “Now, O Lord my God, You have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. 8 And here I am in the midst of Your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! 9 Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern Your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of Yours?”10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. 11 So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing My people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies–12 I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! 13 And I will also give you what you did not ask for–riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! 14 And if you follow Me and obey My decrees and My commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.”15 Then Solomon woke up and realized it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem and stood before the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, where he sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then he invited all his officials to a great banquet. 1 Kings 3:5-15
