In the movie, “The Apostle Paul”, there is a scene where Paul is addressing a high ranking Roman official. He asks the Roman if he has ever sailed? With a response of “yes”, Paul tells this analogy. When you place your hand in the water and pull it out, the water runs off your hand, and no matter how hard you try to grasp it, you can’t. He relates this to all the desires and pursuits we have in life. He says our entire existence is trying to hold that handful of water. Paul then goes on to say that there is another world, one that is represented by the entire ocean. And that’s the one he lives for. Peter reiterated this truth here in 1 Peter 1. Just like that handful of water we try to hold onto is fleeting, so this life we have now will quickly end. Then for those that believe, you will live forever, experiencing the vastness of the entire ocean, and even more. Start living eternally today, it will change everything.
23 For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. 24 As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades.25 But the word of the Lord remains forever.” And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:23-25
