Throughout scripture, but especially in the NT, being faithful to your wife ranks at the top of God's way of living a righteous life. The main reason behind this is the fact that if you're happy/content/satisfied with the intimate relationship with your wife, the temptation to stray isn't as powerful as if you weren't close to your wife. Sexual or relational adultery runs rampant in our society today. The one thing it's lacking is the ability to have and keep a loving, satisfying relationship with your spouse. Living a life above reproach begins by honoring your commitment to remain faithful to the wife of your youth.
This is a trustworthy saying: “If someone aspires to be an elder,[G] he desires an honorable position.” 2 So an elder must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife.[H] He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach. 3 He must not be a heavy drinker[I] or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money. 4 He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him. 5 For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?
