Reading through Deuteronomy, you can’t help but see God’s heart on display. He carefully instructs the Israelites to always leave provisions for the widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. They are not to charge interest on loans to fellow Israelites, and not keep clothing as collateral for more than the daylight hours. God tells them to always remember that they were once slaves in Egypt, and were rescued by Him. This one command by God is the theme of the entire Bible. “You were once lost, now redeemed by God, so have the attitude of gratefulness, and treat others with the Grace God gave you”. Without remembering our past, we can easily forget who we are; undeserved redeemed souls. That’s the common thread that unites all Christians forming an unbreakable bond. God knows what He’s doing, and no one can separate what God has put together. We are conduits of His Grace, we must carry out His Will by extending His Grace to all, even the most undeserved; for we were once undeserved ourselves. Never forget that.
17 “True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt. 18 Always remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God redeemed you from your slavery. That is why I have given you this command.19 “When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all you do. 20 When you beat the olives from your olive trees, don’t go over the boughs twice. Leave the remaining olives for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. 21 When you gather the grapes in your vineyard, don’t glean the vines after they are picked. Leave the remaining grapes for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. 22 Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. That is why I am giving you this command.
