We need to always be careful in interpreting scripture. We can be accurate in our interpretation, and we can be wrong. We always need to evaluate scripture with scripture. If a passage is the only place in the entire Bible that states something that seems to be inconsistent with God’s character, we probably need to seek out help with its true meaning. The first place we need to go is to God, Himself. He will lead you into understanding by either opening up your mind, or sending you to someone with the correct answer. Never take God’s word lightly.
20 Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved–the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray You?” 21 Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?”22 Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow Me.” 23 So the rumor spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that isn’t what Jesus said at all. He only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”
