There are some guarantees in life. We will die one day. The sun will rise tomorrow (it just might not be for us). There will always be evil in this world (until God fulfills His promise). These are just some that happen or will happen. And here’s the most important one: what God promises will ALWAYS come to pass. Here in 2 Kings chapter 15 we read about God’s declaration to Jehu that his reign as king will only last 4 generations. It will then be given to someone else, not related. God does what He says He will do. You can count on that. It’s the same as the sun rising, the day we die, or anything else that happens on a consistent basis that we know to be true. We need to base our life on the fact that God is in control, and He’s worthy of our trust. When we do this, it changes everything. It gives us hope. It gives us confidence in God, knowing He has our back. It helps us move forward when things seem dark and dreary. It gives us reason to get out of bed each day. And most importantly, it gives us an excuse to override our feelings with the truth because even though our feelings are legitimate, they are often overrated.
10 Then Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah, assassinated him in public, and became the next king.11 The rest of the events in Zechariah’s reign are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel. 12 So the Lord’s message to Jehu came true: “Your descendants will be kings of Israel down to the fourth generation.”
