What separates the true believers from the pretenders is this: true believers accept truth regardless of the cost. Pretenders can’t be honest with themselves. That’s why they have to pretend. It’s like living life going through the motions, and expecting to savor what it has to offer. It’s like not exercising, but expecting to get “in shape”. None of us are perfect. Those that examine themselves, and test their own faith, grow closer and deepen their relationship with God. The ability to be honest with oneself is the true mark of a authentic believer of God.
5 Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith.
2 Corinthians 13:5
