Marriage has always been meant for one man and one woman. It’s God’s design. When we try to go beyond or outside this design, we run into consequences. These consequences are God’s way of saying, “you didn’t listen”. Can you imagine trying to please more than one wife? Here in Genesis chapter 30, we get a clear picture of one of these consequences. Jacob is trying to juggle 4 wives, and the one he loves the most is complaining to him about not being able to have children. Her plea for him to give her a child, tips his breaking point and he lashes out. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have to love and meet the needs of 4 wives. One is enough for me. God designed it, so why should we try to change it? As the saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it”. Trying to fix what God has established only leads to your own misery. And when a society tries to fix what ain’t broke, confusion and chaos happen.
1 When Rachel saw that she wasn’t having any children for Jacob, she became jealous of her sister. She pleaded with Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”2 Then Jacob became furious with Rachel. “Am I God?” he asked. “He’s the One who has kept you from having children!”
