When King Solomon says “under the sun”, he means without God. So when he says “everything is meaningless”, he means all of our attempts to find happiness and peace, security and significance, is all in vain. A life not pursuing truth, not seeking out a “made right with God by the work of Jesus” relationship, is futile. You’ll never receive forgiveness and a right relationship with God without knowing He is our first priority in life. And the only way we can get to this point is to realize we are sinners in need of a Savior. It’s the first step in repentance, the only way to be made right with Him. “Under the sun” means without God.
17 So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless–like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 2:17
