The problem with most people in America today is our lack in ability to take criticism. Everyone criticizes, but few know how to handle criticism. I think the main cause is confusion between correction and judgement. We tend to blend them together, which doesn’t allow correction to do its job. People get so offended when someone tries to correct an inappropriate action on their part. They pull the blanket of “judgement” over the issue in order to “save face”, when in reality they need to “man up” and listen to what’s being said. I’ve always said, “when someone criticizes (tries to correct) you, you should weigh the facts. Take the accurate facts and apply them to your life. Take the inaccurate ones and throw them out”. Judgement is God’s business, not ours. We need to start seeing correction for what it is, for our good. How can God teach us anything if we are unwilling to listen to Him? And we need to stop hiding under the blanket of “don’t judge me”, and grow up. Our security comes from God, for no one can take that away from us. The problem lies in our seeking this security in all the wrong places. When we do this, our security becomes insecurity. What you place your security “in”, determines how you see correction/criticism. “Going astray” means walking through life not knowing where your security truly comes from. You can’t live secure if you don’t know where your purpose and significance come from. It’s as simple as that.
17 People who accept discipline are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore correction will go astray.
Proverbs 10:17
