We’ve all heard the phrase, “you can’t judge a book by its cover”, and yet we still do it. We tend to look at people’s appearances rather than observe their character. God does just that. He looks at the heart of every man. He knows what’s there, what makes up his character. He knows that without His guidance man would destroy himself. Look at the world. There’s trouble every where you look. Why? Because man is wicked on his own. Some of the best truths in the Bible, come out of the book of Proverbs: “Guard your heart, for it is the well-spring of life”. If the heart is to be guarded, it must be important. And if God uses the heart as His method of choosing people to serve Him, then maybe we should start doing the same. Examine your own heart before you want to judge someone else’s. You’ll do right when you apply this truth to your own life. There’s more to appearance than meets the eye, there’s an underlying deeper determiner of one’s character. It’s called the heart.
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
