If you ever wonder where people got praying for travel mercies from, look no further than the book of Ezra. Ezra could’ve asked the king for soldiers to protect them on their journey back to Jerusalem, but to Ezra it seemed like a contradiction to his faith. They were carrying a lot of valuable items, easily making them a target for robbers. However, Ezra prayed along with all of the other exiles returning to Israel, and God answered their prayers. So the next time you go on a long journey, ask God for His protection while you travel. You’ll be displaying your dependence upon God, growing your faith, and giving Him exactly what He wants from us.
21 And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that He would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled. 22 For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship Him, but His fierce anger rages against those who abandon Him.” 23 So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and He heard our prayer.
