The reason why some people deny God and all of His truths is because they have no way of processing the evidence. The Bible says God is light, there is no darkness in Him. When people live in darkness, it’s impossible to process the truth because there is no light to shine on it. Let me relate it this way, light is honesty with oneself. If we are not honest with ourselves, how can we ever understand truth? Truth reveals our sinful nature. If we are not honest about it, we won’t admit it, and thus never seek a remedy. If we claim we have no sin, there’s no need for a cure, right? Darkness is denial, it’s the inability to see truth (spiritual blindness). If we don’t ever admit we have a problem, the problem will never get addressed, and we will never be saved. To summarize, if God is light and we live in darkness (pretending to know what’s right), how can we ever change? But if we admit our faults, being honest with ourselves, and step into the light, we can experience God and be saved. Being honest with ourselves is a big deal. It’s a much bigger deal than most people think. Darkness and denial go hand in hand, as does honesty and light.
5 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that His word has no place in our hearts.
