Do you ever think we as Christians settle for second-best? Just because the worldly answer is right there, doesn’t mean we have to settle for it. We think’ “I guess this is as good as it gets”, so we begin to settle for what we have. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a place for being content with what God has given us, but second-best is not one of them. Once we “settle”, it’s easy to allow bitterness to creep in. “I guess this is all there is, so I’d better take it while I can”. When this happens, dissension becomes part of the equation, something God does not want. If we see God as the “First Great Cause”, then we know His best for us isn’t second-best. Living a holy life, prevents this “second-best” mentality from happening. If it does, it lasts a short while, due to our perspective change (The Holy Spirit has a way of making things right through prayer). Don’t settle for second-best, when God’s best is right there in front of you waiting to be received.
14 Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. 15 Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. 16 Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal. 17 You know that afterward, when He wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears.
