Riches will always be a temptation for people. The believer knows that things the world values, such as gold, will be used as pavement to walk on in Heaven. This shows us its true value (pavement). We should never allow the lure of wealth to control our thoughts and actions. I know it’s hard, but the consequences are what’s really costly. Having means (wealth) gives us the ability to say “NO” to God. That’s definitely something God does not want, and neither should we. Money is necessary for life, and nice to have (as long as it’s seen in the right perspective), but it shouldn’t be the sole focus in life, as many will tell you. God tells the Israelites in Deuteronomy 7 that they are not to covet the silver or gold belonging to the people they conquer in the Promised Land, for it will be a trap to them, and is detestable to Him. We should read this and take it to heart. Coveting wealth, especially that which belongs to others, will never deliver what we think it will. Instead of freeing us, it will be a trap that will draw us away from what’s most important in our lives. The most important reason is being away from our closeness to the Lord. Wealth has its place, but it’s not a substitute for what matters most in life. Money just reveals where our heart really is.
25 “You must burn their idols in fire, and you must not covet the silver or gold that covers them. You must not take it or it will become a trap to you, for it is detestable to the Lord your God. 26 Do not bring any detestable objects into your home, for then you will be destroyed, just like them. You must utterly detest such things, for they are set apart for destruction.
