Here’s an interesting question/thought. Don’t know how much truth there is to it, but it’s true in this case. When you reject God, does God allow you to be tormented by evils spirits? Or better stated, does the absence of God’s Spirit leave you unprotected from tormenting, evil spirits? Saul was rejected by God as king. God’s Spirit left him. Since Saul no longer had God’s Spirit, he was tormented with a spirit that caused him to be depressed and fearful. Saul was tormented so much, that he had to enlist David to play the harp to help calm him down in times of great fear and worry. Was it the actual music that calmed Saul, or the fact it was being played by a Spirit-filled individual? I wonder if God allows this to go on in our lives? I just wonder why so many of us are depressed and full of anxiety? Why are we so discontented? Unhappy? Aren’t we the richest nation in the history of the world? Why are we like this when we’ve been tremendously blessed by God? Maybe the reason has to do with this topic. Maybe when we abandon God, He allows these evil spirits to torment us. Have you ever given this deep thought? The remedy is simply to ask God to forgive you and start (or get back to) following Him. Reading Saul’s story certainly motivates me. It clearly shows what selfish and desperate living accomplished; a life full of depression and fear.
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and the Lord sent a tormenting spirit that filled him with depression and fear.15 Some of Saul’s servants said to him, “A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you. 16 Let us find a good musician to play the harp whenever the tormenting spirit troubles you. He will play soothing music, and you will soon be well again.”17 “All right,” Saul said. “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him here.”
1 Samuel 16:14-17
23 And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away.
1 Samuel 16:23
