The NLT translates Jesus’ emotions as “a deep anger welled up within Him” when it came to seeing Mary and others weeping at her brother Lazarus’ death. Why? Could it have been because of their disbelief of what He was about to do? Could it be because Jesus knew this wasn’t how the world was supposed to work (when sin was introduced, death became a reality)? Or even Lazarus’ death reminded of His upcoming torturous, sacrificial death? Maybe there’s another reason. We are not told. The only thing we know is that Jesus was overcome with emotion to the point that He was troubled. Later it tells us He was still angry when He arrived at the tomb. The conclusion I can come to is the fact that death and disease are a result of sin. Sin drives us away from God. Jesus is the only way back to God. Yet the nature inside all of us wants to “do it” our way, not His Way. That’s the saddest thing about life. Death and disease, and trials and tribulations, are all because of this thing called sin. The fact that Jesus was angry, only shows us of His great concern for us. We wouldn’t have to experience these things if sin wasn’t around. But since we do, our only right response is to look to the Savior, the only One worthy of making it right. Throw off your grave clothes, and run to the Savior today. He’s our only hope.
33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within Him, and He was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” He asked them. They told Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much He loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t He have kept Lazarus from dying?”38 Jesus was still angry as He arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. 39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank You for hearing Me. 42 You always hear Me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe You sent Me.”43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”
