Here’s a humbling truth: salvation is a two way street, but it’s initiated and completed only by One of its participants. There is always two participants, the inviter and the invitee. Both must participate for salvation to occur. However, God is always the initiator of the plan. It’s His desire for us that always initiates this exchange. As this Psalmist clearly states, God shines His face upon us first, extending the Heavenly invite. There’s no credit taking in our salvation, it’s God Who initiates, and completes the transaction. Yet while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Rom 5:8). It’s His Prevenient grace. Once you accept this truth, it’s clear what our responsibilities are for the rest of our days. It just takes some folks longer to “get this truth”, that the Psalmist writes about in today’s scripture passage.
3 Turn us again to Yourself, O God. Make Your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved.
Psalms 80:3
